Melbourne Fleet Built On The Back Of UD Trucks

UD Trucks has helped a Melbourne based transport contractor to build his business from a single truck to a fleet of 13 with a staff of over 30 in just ten years.

Hobson Transport was started by Dave Hobson in 1998 with a single well used second hand truck but after just one year he traded up to a new UD PK265 and its reliability and low running cost enabled him to expand the business and build it into the strong and viable operation it is today.

The latest Hobson Transport UD is a new GW400 rigid which joins the other ten UDs on the company's fleet including the original nine-year-old PK, which is still going strong.

"It is fair to say that I have built my business on UD Trucks, they have been ultra reliable, economical to run and very cost effective," said Dave Hobson.

"When I was looking to buy my first truck I was looking to get the best value I could and realised that I could get a better specced truck from UD at the same price as its main opponents, it was a no brainer," he said.

"The first one went so well that every time we need to expand the fleet we turned to UD, it really has been a great relationship, there are never any hassles and UD has been willing to listen and deliver trucks that suit the spec I need," he added.

"The original UD PK is still on fleet and running strong, it is a phenomenal truck," said Dave.

Hobson's Transport contracts to Boral using its fleet to deliver Boral Plasterboard all over Melbourne to building sites and other retail centres.

The company's base is at Hampton Park in Melbourne's East while the trucks operate all over the state including Gippsland, Ballarat and Bendigo, with a number of Hobson's trucks permanently based at Boral branches.

The new Hobson's GW400 is the first Euro 4 spec truck to join the Hobson fleet and the first to use Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology which Dave Hobson says was an important consideration as his company moves to embrace more environmentally friendly trucks.

"UD extended the chassis for us because the GW will be used for larger loads and will tow a trailer as well, It is a great looking truck and will enable us to haul a bigger load more cost effectively," said Dave Hobson.

"Plasterboard is very dense material and is quite heavy for its bulk so you need a truck that is going to cope with heavy loads as well as rough ground because they often have to access building sites, the UDs take this in their stride.

"We always strive to present our trucks in the best possible manner and paint the trucks in the Boral green and gold paint scheme, they look terrific and Boral really appreciate the effort we go to keep the trucks looking great," he added.

Hobson's drivers love their UDs and all praise the comfort as well as the safety features, which one of the drivers got to test first hand.

"One of our drivers misjudged things on the Bolte Bridge one day hitting a bollard and rolling the truck over, he was fine but his ego was fairly badly bruised, still the cab safety of the UD was exceptional and that is important in terms of looking after your employees," said Dave.

"We have tried a couple of other brands but really it only proved that UD is the best option for us and we will continue to remain loyal to UD in the future," he concluded.
