UD Trucks reveals that production of its new heavy duty truck range developed for Asia and other growth markets will start in Thailand. The Thai plant will become an export hub for South East Asia.
The new UD truck range to be launched later this year is developed for seizing growth opportunities in Asia and other fast-growing markets. It will have a wide range of applications, from long-haulage and distribution to construction and mining.
The industrial system for the new production line is currently under development in Thailand. The plant will become the first completely built-up production facility for UD Trucks outside Japan. It will not only target the Thai market but also serve as a hub for export to other markets in South East Asia.
With a 2bn baht investment, the plant has been extended by 20,000 square meters that includes a modern assembly line, new cab plant and paint shop. The plant is part of the Volvo Group’s global production system and located in Samut Prakarn, an eastern suburb of Greater Bangkok. It will have a technical production capacity up to about 20,000 units per annum.
“The time to meet market demand comes closer. We have trained our people thoroughly and they are soon fully prepared to start production of the new UD trucks.” says Senior Vice President Kyouji Funatsumaru, responsible for UD trucks’ manufacturing in Asia Pacific.
Previously, UD Trucks revealed that the new truck range will also be manufactured in India and China.
The factory in Thailand has been producing vehicles since 1976 and gradually increased its capacity. It became specialized on Volvo trucks and buses in 2000. Currently, it has 450 employees and provides cabs and assembly, axle assembly, and CKD packing for Volvo trucks and buses.
