The five donated UD 40L trucks helped the Shoprite Mobile Kitchen feeding scheme to provide more than 357 550 cups of soup with a slice of bread to needy communities during March. To date this project has served more than 16.7 million cups of soup across the country.
The UD trucks operate seven days a week to identify areas and provide meals to needy communities. Each vehicle is manned by two crews to ensure maximum optimisation, and is kitted with a fully-functional kitchen where the nutritional soup is prepared. Each truck is also able to carry 500-litres of water.
In a country where only one in five families are food secure and micronutrient deficiency is a reality, this project aims to address hunger and malnutrition by providing food to school children, senior citizens, hundreds of thousands of people affected by job losses, as well as community suffering after natural disaster.
“It is wonderful to think that a mere truck can bring so much hope, nourishment and change to so many people during the space of just one month. We are very proud to be part of this wonderful project,” said Laureen Stock, senior manager of marketing at UD Trucks Southern Africa.
